A Fresh Horizon for Greater Auckland
A few months ago we asked for your help, and you answered.
Thanks to the generous support we received, you may have noticed a more consistent and diverse stream of content over the last few months – which is in large part due to us being able to pay for editorial work. Significantly, this has also given us some capacity and breathing room to actively explore how Greater Auckland can grow to reach a wider community of readers, so we can sustain longer-term conversations and campaigns that help make our city better.
As part of this, we've been more active lately on social media, such as Twitter, Bluesky, and LinkedIn – and other work has been happening in the background to ensure our mission stays sustainable (more on that soon).
Given the impact we've had over the years, it's important to us to make sure any changes we make will strengthen rather than jeopardise our core vision of helping Auckland become a better place to live in, to move around, and to connect with others. So each step is being undertaken thoughtfully, with some help and advice from fellow independent media outlets.
Today, we are excited to announce we are expanding to Substack, where we'll be cross-posting our daily stories, along with the Weekly Roundup.
To be clear: we'll keep releasing our posts on this website now and in the future, as we strongly value keeping the Greater Auckland archive accessible and independent.
That said, expanding to Substack allows us to achieve a few important things:
Firstly, it provides another platform to grow our readership - increasing our impact, and widening our reach to new and diverse audiences.
Secondly, it gives us more ways to engage with our community of readers and expand our coverage of the issues that matter to you.
Thirdly, it allows us to offer additional features for those who support us - such as community chat-rooms, webinars, events, and more.
Finally, it gives you, our readers, yet another way to share our stories with people you think may be intrigued!
We'll be starting out slow, and there are bound to be some bumps along the way, but we are excited at the possibilities and hope you'll join us on this journey in whatever ways suit you.
For those generously supporting us right now with a recurring donation, we'd be very happy to transfer your support to a Substack subscription if that works best for you. Handily, Substack uses the same payment processor (Stripe) as our website, so this allows us to make this change at the back-end. Reach out to us if you'd like to make this switch.
And to all of our amazing readers and community, thank you again for all your support – both moral and financial – that has enabled our work over the years. We'd love to hear any feedback or suggestions you might have, and we look forward to exploring these new horizons with you all.
